5 Simple Ways to Extend the Life of Your Home Appliances

Your appliances work hard every day — and with just a little routine care, they can last years longer. Here are five easy habits that Charlotte homeowners can start today.

1. Clean Your Dryer Vent Every Year

A clogged dryer vent is one of the most common — and most dangerous — appliance problems. Lint buildup restricts airflow, makes your dryer work harder, and can even cause fires. Clean the lint trap after every load, and have the full vent line professionally cleaned once a year.

2. Don’t Overload Your Washer

Overloading puts stress on the drum bearings, motor, and suspension. Run medium-sized loads and make sure heavy items like jeans and towels are evenly distributed. Your washer will spin better and last significantly longer.

3. Check Your Refrigerator Door Seals

Worn or dirty door gaskets let cold air escape, forcing the compressor to work overtime. Once a month, wipe the seals with a damp cloth and do the “paper test” — close the door on a piece of paper. If it slides out easily, the seal needs replacing.

4. Run a Cleaning Cycle on Your Washer Monthly

Front-load washers especially are prone to mold and odor buildup. Run an empty hot cycle with two cups of white vinegar once a month, leave the door open between washes, and wipe down the rubber gasket regularly.

5. Don’t Ignore Small Problems

A strange noise, a slight leak, or a longer-than-usual cycle are all early warning signs. Catching a small issue early almost always costs less than waiting for a full breakdown. If something feels off — call a technician before it gets worse.
